Choosing Safe Fabrics for Sensitive Baby Skin

Marisol Ortega, Textile SpecialistApril 20264 min read

A newborn's skin is thinner and more permeable than an adult's, so what touches it matters more than you'd think.

Fabrics that work well

Organic cotton, muslin, and bamboo are breathable, soft, and generally well tolerated by sensitive skin. Look for GOTS-certified organic cotton if you want assurance it's free of harsh processing chemicals.

What to avoid

Synthetic blends can trap heat and irritate sensitive skin, and clothing treated with flame retardants or heavy dyes is worth avoiding for newborns. Always wash new clothing before the first wear.

A note on sizing

Loose, roomy fits are safer and more comfortable than snug clothing, especially around the neck and wrists โ€” newborns grow fast, and roomier items also just last longer.
